tVNS® E is a non-invasive medical device with a well-documented safety profile. Most patients tolerate the treatment well, and serious side effects are rare. However, as with any medical treatment, some users may experience mild to moderate side effects, particularly in the early stages of use.
Common Side Effects #
These side effects are generally mild and tend to subside as the body adjusts to the stimulation:
- Skin irritation (redness, itching, or discomfort at the electrode site)
- Tingling, stinging, or prickling sensation in the ear
- Mild headache or dizziness
- Fatigue or drowsiness
- Temporary voice changes or hoarseness
- Mild nausea
- Temporary changes in hearing perception
Less Common Side Effects #
Though rare, some users have reported experiencing:
- Burning sensation or unpleasantness during stimulation
- Vertigo or balance disturbances
- Transient numbness or paresthesia (tingling sensations)
- Pruritus (itching) or erythema (skin redness) at the electrode site
- Muscle contractions in the face or neck
- Ear pain, neck pain, or general pain
- Chest discomfort
- Vomiting, diarrhea, or digestive issues
- Anxiety attacks or increased stress levels
- Dysesthesia (abnormal sensation)
- Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
- Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) – though studies suggest this is not clinically significant
- Vestibular neuronitis (inflammation of the inner ear nerve, affecting balance)
Important Considerations for Epilepsy and Depression Patients #
As with other drug or neurostimulation therapies, tVNS® treatment may initially lead to a temporary increase in epileptic seizures in epilepsy patients or a temporary worsening of symptoms in depression patients. This is a known effect in neuromodulation therapies, as the nervous system adapts to the stimulation.
How to Minimize Side Effects #
- Start with a low stimulation intensity and gradually increase as tolerated.
- Ensure the electrode is correctly positioned in the cymba concha of the ear.
- If you experience skin irritation, use the provided electrode cream or switch to electrode pads.
- Take breaks if you experience discomfort and resume at a lower intensity.
When to Contact a Healthcare Provider #
Most side effects subside after the stimulation has ended. However, if you experience persistent, severe, or concerning side effects, discontinue use and consult your physician.
In the event of serious incidents in connection with the use of the product, please inform the manufacturer be-on-market GmbH, Lilienstr. 33, D-91244 Reichenschwand and the responsible authority.
