What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects millions worldwide, characterized by the tendency to have recurrent seizures. These seizures are the result of sudden, excessive electrical discharges in a group of brain cells. Different parts of the brain can be the source of these seizures, which can vary in frequency and intensity, profoundly impacting an individual’s quality of life.

The Challenge of Epilepsy Medication

Traditionally, epilepsy is managed with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) aimed at controlling or reducing the frequency of seizures. While medication is effective for many, it’s not without its challenges. A significant number of patients continue to experience seizures despite medication, and side effects of AEDs can be substantial. These can range from mild inconveniences like fatigue and dizziness to more severe impacts on mood, cognitive function, and physical health.

Invasive VNS: A Historical Overview

For those whose seizures are not well-controlled by medication, invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) has been a treatment option for decades. This approach requires surgical implantation of a device that sends regular, mild pulses of electrical energy to the brain via the vagus nerve. However, the procedure requires surgery, posing risks such as infection and complications. Side effects like voice changes and coughing are common, and only 50-60% of patients respond to treatment. Additionally, the battery must be surgically replaced every five years.

Introducing Non-Invasive tVNS®

Our tVNS® device represents a groundbreaking advancement in the treatment of epilepsy: a non-invasive form of VNS that eliminates the need for surgery. By stimulating the vagus nerve through the skin at the cymba concha—an area of the ear with direct connections to the vagus nerve—tVNS® offers a safe and user-friendly alternative. This innovative approach harnesses the therapeutic potential of VNS while significantly reducing the risk of side effects and complications associated with invasive procedures.

With tVNS®, patients have access to a novel form of epilepsy management that is both effective and minimally intrusive, reflecting our commitment to improving the lives of those living with this challenging condition.

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of epilepsy

Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tVNS®) is an innovative approach to epilepsy management that offers a non-invasive, drug-free alternative to traditional treatments.

The vagus nerve, central to our body’s nervous system, plays a critical role in maintaining homeostasis. tVNS® harnesses the therapeutic potential of this nerve through targeted stimulation of its auricular branch, accessible within the ear.

This innovative approach utilizes gentle electrical impulses to modulate the vagus nerve’s activity, encouraging a state of balance across the body’s systems. The result? A reduction in the seizure frequency in epilepsy patients, achieved through a method that avoids the invasiveness of surgery and the side effects associated with medication.

Approved as a Class IIa medical device under the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR), tVNS® sets a new standard in the treatment of neurological conditions, offering a blend of efficacy, safety, and simplicity.

You can use tVNS® anytime, anywhere. It's easy to use, portable, and discrete.

tVNS® delivers targeted neurostimulation therapy designed specifically to manage epilepsy by engaging the vagus nerve’s ability to modulate brain activity. This innovative treatment stimulates the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN) via the skin using gentle, precise electrical impulses. These signals first reach the brain stem and then ascend to higher brain centers, aiming to correct the dysregulation associated with epilepsy.

Designed for daily life, tVNS® is easy to use, portable, and discreet, enabling integration into your daily routine without disruption. Whether you’re at home, at work, or on the go, tVNS® offers a reliable and accessible way to reduce seizure frequency and improve quality of life.

Each session promotes a step towards neurological balance, utilizing the body’s own pathways to enhance overall wellbeing. The user-friendly nature of the tVNS® device ensures that beginning and continuing treatment is simple, empowering you to manage your epilepsy effectively and non-invasively.

Sustained seizure freedom in a 24-year-old patient after treatment with our tVNS® device

In the journal Seizure: European Journal of Epilepsy, the following case study demonstrates the effective use of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS®) in achieving sustained seizure freedom in a patient with drug-resistant epilepsy caused by subcortical band heterotopias.

The patient, who had experienced epilepsy since childhood and had poor control over seizures with multiple medications, found significant improvement with tVNS®. Initiated after other treatments failed to maintain seizure control, tVNS® led to an absence of seizures for over 56 months at the time of reporting. This case highlights tVNS® as a promising non-pharmaceutical option, emphasizing its potential as an adjunctive treatment in managing drug-resistant forms of epilepsy.

Better days are ahead.

With its non-invasive approach, patient-friendly treatments, and minimal side effects, tVNS® offers a new horizon of hope and relief for those living with epilepsy. Embrace a future where each day holds the promise of greater comfort and enhanced quality of life.
