When Should tVNS Not Be Used?

While tVNS® E is a safe and well-tolerated medical device, there are certain situations where its use is not recommended due to potential risks or contraindications.

Do Not Use tVNS® If You: #

  • Are pregnant – The effects of tVNS® on pregnancy have not been studied, and stimulation of the vagus nerve may have unintended effects during pregnancy.
  • Have a pacemaker, cochlear implant, or any other implanted medical device – The electrical impulses from tVNS® may interfere with implanted medical devices, posing potential safety risks.
  • Have an active infection or open wounds near the stimulation site – If the skin around the ear is irritated, injured, or infected, wait until the area has fully healed before using tVNS® to avoid complications.
  • Have a cerebral shunt (e.g., for the treatment of hydrocephalus)Vagus nerve stimulation may affect cerebrospinal fluid regulation, making tVNS® unsuitable for individuals with a cerebral shunt.
